August 15, 2001--SMI has produced the United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility (UNDP-GEF) Persistent Organic Pollutants (Pops) Resource Kit, a 170 page readily accessible source for information and useful contacts for Pops, the Stockholm Convention and UNDP-GEF contacts. The publication, which includes background papers on Pops, the Convention, and the linkages between Pops and sustainable human development, contains information to help countries prepare their Pops Enabling Activities and non governmental organizations to identify small grants and medium and full projects which address Pops issues. SMI, which has been retained by UNDP for many projects, was initially hired by UNDP as "marketing experts" to advise the Government of Egypt in 1986 regarding energy conservation issues. Another major assignment was similar field work in Somalia in 1988. Subsequent to these assignments, UNDP-GEF has principally retained SMI to assist it prepare and disseminate information about its activities.
